THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has formalized the selection of Yeng Guiao as men’s national coach and Patrick Aquino as Guiao’s counterpart with the women’s side.

SBP president Al Panlilio has also designated champion mentor Jong Uichico as head of the Coaches and Sports Development and Standards, while former PBA great Ronnie Magsanoc stays as head of the federation’s 3x3 program.

Meanwhile, Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin has emerged as the leading candidate to handle the country’s youth program following his success at Ateneo, where he won back-to-back UAAP titles in 2017 and 2018.

Other appointees include Rebo Saguisag as head of the SBP Technical Commission program, along with deputy Oscar Moreno Jr.

“We have challenges and it’s about time changes are made,” said Panlilio of the SBP, which he said came out even strong following the Philippine Arena brawl that marred the Philippines versus Australia game in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

“The SBP’s vision is to be recognized in the regional and global levels as a world-class national governing federation,” he added.

The SBP structure remains the same, with Panlilio still accountable to the federation’s Board of Trustees, with Executive Director Sonny Barrios and newly-appointed Special Assistant to the President Ryan Gregorio both working under him.

“We now have an optimized table of organization. Everybody’s in place and the responsibilities are defined,” stressed the SBP head. “We are solidifying SBP and we’re excited to involve our regional directors in moving forward. We are strengthening our organization to be able to function effectively with our accountabilities.”

While the men’s team under Guiao remains its prime focus, the SBP is also out to strengthen its 3x3 program, owing to its potential as a possible source of Olympic medal in the future.

“We might get to the Olympics via 3x3 first before 5x5,” said Panlilio.
