CEBU - Southwestern University booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup after routing University of the East, 80-63, Sunday at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Miffed by their loss to La Salle the previous game, the Cobras vented their on ire on the Red Warriors as they pounced on the defending champions behind their inside-out game anchored on the dominant plays of Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo.
Sanjo, who struggled against La Salle's defense on Saturday, flourished against UE's big men led by the hulking Charles Mammie, and finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds.
SWU finished the group stage with a 5-1 record while UE tumbled out of contention with an even 3-3 card.
The Cobras led by as much as 43-23 after a mid-range jumper by JR Parker, but Roi Sumang caught fire towards the end of the third and pulled UE to within 43-53.
However, Sanjo was relentless and scored 10 points in the fourth to tow SWU to the crucial victory.
Sumang ended up with 20 points while Chris Javier, who nearly came to blows with teammate Charles Mammie at halftime, finished with 17.
Meanwhile, defending UAAP champion La Salle defeated University of San Carlos, 82-68, with Jeron Teng leading the Archers with 18 points while Almond Vosotros added 16.
La Salle improved its record to 4-1, while USC ended its stint with a 1-5 mark.
