SOUTHWESTERN University proved steadier at crunchtime, outlasting National University, 66-63, in the 7th Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup Wednesday night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo anchored the Cobras’ impressive showing on both ends of the floor with 28 points while playing excellent defense on NU’s Alfred Aroga who fouled out with 1:15 remaining in the contest.
Newly-acquired Fil-American guard JR Parker was also a catalyst as he scored 10 points, none bigger than a corner three that gave SWU a 66-63 lead with under two minutes to go.
NU, which is rebuilding after the departure of former two-time UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks, had a chance to get closer but Henry Batayene committed a costly turnover with just seconds left in the game.
The win gave SWU the top spot in Group A of the six-team pocket tournament. NU on other hand, is set to play Raphael’s Cafe on Thursday night with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Friday.
Aroga paced NU with 17 markers while Troy Rosario added 11.
