SOUTHWESTERN University defeated Jose Rizal University, 72-68, on Wednesday as a Cebu-based team finally made its presence felt in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo had 21 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks for the Cobras, who won their first game in Group A of the annual preseason meet.
The victory of the Cobras came after two other Cebu teams failed to register a win against Manila-based schools.
University of San Carlos carries a 1-2 record, although its lone win came at the expense of University of the Visayas.
“Of course, I’m happy about the win because last week, all Cebuano teams lost. So the pressure was on us to win not only for the school but for Cebu,” said Southwestern University coach Yayoy Alcoseba.
Rookie Jasper Parker had 12 points while former La Salle and Ateneo cager Mark Tallo had nine points, six rebounds, and nine assists for SWU, which finished runner-up to La Salle in last year’s Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).
The Cobras led by as many as 63-43, before fighting back a Heavy Bombers comeback attempt to clinch the win.
JRU dropped to its first loss of the tournament for a 2-1 slate.
