Strong finishing kick lifts Blazers past Tamaraws

COLLEGE of Saint Benilde came through with a strong closing run to stun Far Eastern University, 81-74, on Friday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

The Blazers finished the game with a 12-7 blast while clustering nine straight points to clinch its third win in seven outings. CSB has now won three of its last four outings.

“It’s a big win for us,” said CSB coach Gabby Velasco. “I hope that we can look forward positively in our NCAA campaign.”

The Blazers joined the Tamaraws in a tie for fifth place. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

Paolo Taha had 19 points including a spectacular play that put FEU away for good. Taha received a lob pass from Jonathan Grey then complated a three-point play which gave CSB a 74-66 lead with 1:57 to go in the game.

Luis Sinco had 15 points while Fons Saavedra chipped in 14 and nine rebounds. Grey added 10.

CSB won despite being limited to just nine points in the second period.

Anthony Hargrove collected 19 points and nine rebounds while RR Garcia and Mike Tolomia added 14 and 11 apiece for FEU.

Terrence Romeo was in street clothes and missed the game.
