Stephen’s High School and MGC-New Life Christian Academy earned automatic semifinal berths with twice-to-beat advantages after finishing in the top two of the Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association Season 11 high school basketball tournament.
The Stephenians, led by the trio of Sam Jarone Ng, Bryle Gareth Teng, and Josh Cedrick Ong, topped the eliminations with a 6-1 win-loss record but stumbled in their final game, losing to Uno High School, 71-48.
Meanwhile, the New Lifers, bannered by Adam Keith Uy and Karl Bryan Yue, had to hack a 75-62 victory over Uno in their second-place playoff on Tuesday to earn the second semis berth after finishing with a 5-2 slate.
Uno, on the other hand, will have to settle for third place in the playoffs but will still enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals against no. 6-seed Philippine Cultural College (2-5).
No. 4 St. Jude Catholic School (4-3), anchored by MVP frontrunner Ethan Kaw, already progressed to the semifinals after maximizing its twice-to-beat edge in its 78-71 win over no. 5 Jubilee Christian Academy (4-3) last Tuesday.
Knocked out of the eight-team field were Pace Academy (2-5) and Grace Christian College (0-7) in this tournament supported by Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, with SSHS Alumni Batch ’74, Canyon Hotels and Resorts, H-Star Enterprises, Tai Chi Liniment, and Spalding serving as sponsors.
The league will take a two-week break to give way to academics before resuming for the rest of the playoffs.
