FOR Taylor Statham, the Philippine teams' shocking performance in Day One of the Doha Masters in the 2019 Fiba 3x3 World Tour proved that they can hang with the best the world has to offer.
"I think both teams showed that they can play with anybody," he said after the top teams from the President's Cup announced to the world that they are here to conquer.
Pasig Chooks and Balanga Chooks both cut heavyweights down to size and swept their games in pool play to snag top seeds going to the knockout playoffs.
Statham himself turned heads in Pasig Chooks' 19-16 win over world No. 1 Liman of Serbia that left everyone in attendance inside Katara Amphitheatre in awe.
But the Fil-Am forward isn't easing up on the pedal, especially with a quarterfinal showdown against world No. 3 Riga Ghetto slated at 9:45 p.m. on Friday.
"Beating the number one team in the world is a great accomplishment, but we are nowhere near satisfied. If anything, it’s more motivation going into the quarters," he said.
"Day Two of the tournament is what matters. It’s where all the pressure is, where people bring their best, and where you have to fight through constant adversity."
The Philippine teams, though, are coming in inspired as another strong Filipino contingent is expected to come out and support for Day Two.
And Statham wants to send them home happy.
"As long as we stay together and continue to play for our kabayans, we will reach our goals," he said.
