St. Clare edges Fatima in thrilling finals decider to claim first-ever Naascu crown

Oct 15, 2016

ST. Clare College finally captured the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Naascu) crown after four tries with a slim win over Our Lady of Fatima University, 64-62, in the rubber match on Friday at the Makati Coliseum.

Paeng Rebugio had 16 points, while Aris Dionisio scored 12 markers for the Saints, who took the crown for the first time since 2012 after finishing in second place for three successive years.

Dionisio was later named MVP of the season.

Rebugio and Dionisio teamed up in a 12-3 run to have some breathing room over the Phoenix, 62-57, in the fourth period.

The Saints also had a defensive gem in the final seconds with Fatima’s Joseph Marquez missing a potential game-winning triple.

The Phoenix forced a do-or-die match after beating the Saints, 64-45, in Game Two on Thursday at the Makati Coliseum.
