    After opening-day upset, St Clare College vents ire on PMMS five in NAASCU basketball

    DEFENDING champion St. Clare College bounced back from a heartbreaking setback on opening day, beating Philippine Merchant Marine School, 98-67, in the NAASCU men's basketball tournament at the RTU gym.

    Last year's MVP Aris Dionisio scattered 22 points and three other players scored in double figures for the Saints, who were never seriously threatened on the way to their first win in two games in this 17-team comperition.

    Dionisio also had nine rebounds.

    Earvin Mendoza added 19 points, while Mohamed Pare contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds.

    The Saints of NAASCU head Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem and coach Jino Manansala lost to Philippine Christian University in overtime last Thursday, but were in unforgiving mood against the Mariners.

    So dominant were the Caloocan City-based Saints that they led by 23 points at haltiime, 53-30, and by 34 points after three quarters, 82-48.

    Rizal Technological University whipped City University of Pasay, 90-74, and De Ocampo Memorial College  bested Holy Angel University, 101-67.

    Cyrus Tabi, Kim Herbert Reyes and Nicole Jay Liquinan combined for 46 po8nts for the Thunder, who broke away from a close contest with a strong third-quarter run.

    Edgar Erice Jr. led  CUP with 25 markers.
