THE Lyceum Pirates advanced to the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup semifinals with an 86-71 win over San Sebastian College on Wednesday in San Juan.
Spencer Pretta connected on three triples in the second quarter to allow the Pirates to pull away and win the quarterfinal match.
Lyceum will play the winner of the Far Eastern University-La Salle quarterfinal match in their first-ever Filoil semifinal appearance in Pirates history.
Pretta wound up with five triples to lead all scorers with 17 points, while CJ Perez had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Lyceum coach Topex Robinson, who was on vacation during the Pirates' preparation against the Stags, lauded the entire team especially his coaching staff.
"The coaches really did a great job preparing the team - coach Jeff Perlas, coach Rommel Adducul," said Robinson. "They really put in the works knowing that they have to be mentally tough to play a San Sebastian team.
Two triples from Pretta and one from Mike Harry Nzeusseu gave the Pirates an eight-point lead, 33-25, near the end of the first half.
"I guess it's just the trust that we both have," said Robinson of Pretta. "He knows that that is his job. If he is not going to take threes, he is not doing what he is made for."
Alfren Gayosa had 14 points for the Stags.
The Pirates shot 12-of-36 from three-point range as they continue to pull off surprises in the preseason with NCAA Season 93 fast approaching.
