COLEGIO de San Lorenzo impressed in its opener of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League NCR Qualifiers, dropping Jose Rizal University at the Heavy Bombers’ home gym, 83-58, on Monday afternoon in Mandaluyong City.
High flying Beninese forward Soulemane Chabi Yo led the UCBL champions, teaming with Jon Formenta in a sizzling third quarter run to put away the match for good.
Chabi Yo scored 12 points in that period displaying incredible skill and jaw dropping athleticism as he wowed the home crowd with an effortless 360 dunk on the break near the end of the period.
Formento added three triples in that stretch as the Griffins ourscored the Heavy Bombers 28-6 to turn a 35-30 halftime edge to a commanding 65-36 lead entering the payoff period.
"Medyo nangangapa kami nung first two quarters, hindi namin magawa yung laro namin kasi for the longest time hindi naman kami nakakalaro against NCAA teams so hype pa yung mga bata," said San Lorenzo coach Bonnie Garcia.
"Nung third quarter, medyo nakita na namin, we started working na on our fastbreak, yung running game, yun ang laro namin," he added.
Chabi Yo finished with 28 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals for San Lorenzo, one win away from ruling Group A which also includes NAASCU champion St. Clare.
Formento added 16 points while veteran guard Charles Callano had eight points and seven assists.
Michael Perez led the Heavy Bombers with 14 points as MJ dela Virgen and Karl Bordon added nine apiece.
