SPORTS fans in Cebu City are in line to get a state-of-the-art viewing experience three years from now.

Barely a year after the successful launch of the Mall of Asia Arena, SM group of companies has already laid down a plan for the construction of its own arena in the Queen City of the South.

“Yes, we’re putting up another arena in Cebu,” said SM Mall of Asia Arena marketing head Nicole Deato.

The MOA official said a huge lot has already been designated for the arena, which will be slightly smaller than the MOA Arena and is being eyed for completion in two to three years.

“The only thing sketchy as of the moment is the name of the said arena … but we’re looking at it to be done in maybe three years,” she said.

Once completed, the plan should give Cebu an ideal venue to host major sporting events like the PBA and boxing matches, which most of the time are being held at the Waterfront Hotel in Mactan.

The 51-year-old Cebu Coliseum continues to host some of the biggest sports events in the province while the Hoops Dome, inaugurated a few years back in Lapu-Lapu City, is big enough to accommodate 8,000 fans.

At the same time, Deato revealed to Spin.ph that their company is now looking at options to expand the current 20-thousand capacity of the MOA arena.

“We’re looking at different options. We’re always a work in progress … Whatever we can do to improve the experience of our customers and promoters, we’re open to that,” she said.

Deato said the PBA is one of their valued partners.

“We always consider the PBA as a valued partner … so we always extend whatever accommodation we can to make sure we keep a healthy relationship with them,” said Deato.
