Sky is the limit for Adamson's gentle giant Sewa, says Austria

    Apr 22, 2013
“Before sabi niya, ‘I’m big, I don’t want the (other) player to cry.’ That was his exact words. Kasi daw kapag bumangga sa kanya, masasaktan," says Adamson coach Leo Austria of Ingrid Sewa. Jerome Ascano

ADAMSON big man Ingrid Sewa is so nice he doesn't want to hurt anyone, least of all opposing players, inside the court.

“He has a good heart,” Adamson coach Leo Austria said of his 6-foot-9 Cameroonian center, who will be eligible to play for the Falcons in the coming UAAP season after completing his two-year residency. “He is trying to be nice to everyone.

“Before sabi niya, ‘I’m big, I don’t want the (other) player to cry.’ That was the exact word na sinabi niya. Kasi daw kapag bumangga sa kanya, masasaktan sa kanya.

But I told him, 'Don’t be nice to your opponent.'”

Sewa may be gentle and kind but if Austria succeeds in bringing out a little mean streak in the Cameroonian, he figures to be one of the most intimidating players to see action in the country's premier college league.

The 19-year-old gave a glimpse of what he's capable of on Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup when he scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds - both team highs - in just 20 minutes in the Falcons' 68-67 win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.

Not bad for someone who was so raw in his first few games for the Falcons he once scored an own goal.

“He is still young. Talagang makikita mo nung 17 years old siya, he doesn’t know anything about basketball. But the good thing is he wants to learn,” Austria said.

Sewa, on the other hand, has complete faith in his coach.

“I know I can do that,” said Sewa when asked if he can dominate for the Falcons this season. “I’m proud of myself and my coach. I know he is the best coach in the league.

“I will do my best. I know I can do more than what I did (in my first game),” said Sewa.

Austria hopes Sewa's breakout game against FEU will be a portent of things to come for the Falcons center.

“I’m very happy because it was his best game. During our games in the Fr. Martin (Cup), he was not that good. Maybe he was just waiting for the big game. I hope ‘yung confidence niya magtuluy-tuloy,” said Austria.

“He is a force to be reckoned with sa team namin because he is the biggest guy on the floor. We have to take advantage of him inside. I hope that he realizes that he has all the advantages.”
