THE Senate is set to honor the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas 2.0 team for their conquest of the William Jones Cup title in Taipei.
Senator Antonio Trillanes congratulated Smart Gilas 2.0 on Tuesday and revealed the plan to honor the team at the Senate during Tuesday’s committee hearing of the Senate Amateur Sports Competitiveness Committee.
Trillanes called a committee hearing Tuesday to discuss the state of Philippine sports following the country’s lackluster performance in the 2012 London Olympics.
But Trillanes took time out to congratulate the team in the presence of Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) secretary-general Patrick Gregorio, who is also part of the Smart group.
“On behalf of the Senate, I’m extending my congratulations to the Smart Gilas team. We will be honoring the team so expect a resolution soon,” said Trillanes, who chairs the committee.
Sen. Franklin Drilon, who watched the Nationals beat Team USA on Sunday after a speaking engagement in Taipei, also dropped by the hearing to offer his congratulations.
“I was told that there was a game so I dropped by to watch,” said Drilon.
