MALACCA, MALAYSIA — Perlas Pilipinas unleashed its crippling pressure defense in the second period en route to posting an easy 69-43 triumph over Singapore at the start of the Seaba Women’s Championship at the Bukit Serindit Indoor Stadium.
A 21-4 run in the final four minutes of the second period allowed the Filipinas to break the game wide open, 46-27, going to the halftime break.
Perlas was able to force Singapore to 14 turnovers, resulting in 16 bonus points.
Chak Cabinbin, a new face in the squad and a perennial MVP in the WNCAA, provided a spark after taking over the spot of Fil-Am guard Sofia Roman, who is still finishing her studies in the United States.
The pint-size guard Cabinbin scored 13 points in two quarters on her way to finishing with a team-high 16 markers. Camill Sambile scored eight of her 10 points in the second period alone.
Allana Lim chipped in nine points while Cindy Resultay contributed eight boards for the Filipinas.
“We were a little bit sluggish. We came here 1:30 p.m. and it was like siesta time,” said Perlas head coach Patrick Aquino. “But I’ve told the players, 'You’ve got to work hard from start to finish and you can’t have that kind of start against teams like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.'”
Next in line for the Philippines is Laos, which it battles on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
