Sea Lions, Wang's Ballclub arrange title showdown in MBL Open

    Jun 18, 2014

TOP two seeds Sea Lions and Wang's Ballclub set up a title showdown by whipping their semifinal rivals recently in the 2014 MBL Open basketball championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

No. 1 Sea Lions subdued Naascu champion Centro Escolar University, 83-76, while Wang's Ballclub humbled ISAA side St. Dominic College of Asia, 103-63.

Former PBA player Egay Billones scored 20 points, Ronnie Zagala added 15 points and Jun Panares contributed 13 for Sea Lions, who survived a late CEU fightback.

Patrick Aquino topscored with 29, including 17 in CEU’s 31-point fourth-quarter explosion that made the game interesting in the end.

Meanwhile, Anthony Cuevas came up with 20 points as Wang's Ballclub turned back surprise semifinalist St. Dominic College.

Cuevas scored 14 in the second and third quarters when Wang's outscored St. Dominic, 61-25, to turn a close contest into a rout.

Norvee Monzon and Sherwin Lao paced the Red Pikes with 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Sea Lions defeated Wang's, 81-80, on a controversial buzzer-beating three-point shot by Billones last month in the tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Dickies Underwear, PRC Couriers and Zucchero Cafe.
