OLIVAREZ College outlasted La Salle-Dasmarinas 103-101 recently to win their first ever cage crown in the 11th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.
Six-foot-two Johnny Jasmin, who plays for Café France in the PBA Developmental League, scored on a putback with 17.9 seconds remaining to help the Sea Lions end the series at the Patriots’ home turf at the Ugnayang La Salle gymnasium in Cavite.
Jasmin finished with 24 points, including six in the fourth extension period, to lead the Sucat-based cagers to a two-game sweep of the championship showdown. They took Game One, 67-62.
Franklin Mancio and Most Valuable Player John Flores contributed 16 points each, while Eldridge Corpus chipped in 12 for Olivarez College, runner-up to Philippine School of Business Administration last season.
The Patriots’ Clifford Castro tied the count for the last time at 101-all with 40.9 ticks to go but Jasmin scored the game winner in the next play.
Castro led the Patriots with 19 points, while Jeff Manuel and Jeffrey Acain made 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Jasmin sent the contest into its first overtime with a jumper with 26.5 seconds left to make it 73-all.
Manuel sent the match into a second overtime with a charity with 11.3 ticks to go, 78-all.
The game went into a third overtime when Mancio converted on a pass by Corpus for an 84-all count.
