CENTRO Escolar University claimed a second straight win after turning back pesky College of St. Benilde, 77-68, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan on Friday.
Import Rodrigue Ebondo of the Democratic Republic of Congo finished with 15 points, the same output of Alfred Batino, while Mon Abundo added 12 for the Scorpions, who leads Group C with a perfect 2-0 slate.
“First, praise God, second, the boys really played well,” said CEU coach Egay Macaraya. “The boys composed themselves that's why we won the game.”
The Scorpions saw their 19-point in the third quarter lead (40-21) cut down to 62-70 by the Blazers in the fourth period following a three-pointer by RJ Argamino.
The Blazers made it to within 68-72 behind the three-point shooting of Argamino and Jonathan Grey, but time ran out on the side of St. Benilde.
“We tend to be complacent, eh 'yung other side gusto bumawi,” said Macaraya. “Hopefully every game we could compose ourselves and stay calm kasi kami naman ang lamang.”
Grey had 13 for St. Benilde (0-1), while JR Ongtengco contributed 12 and Romeo Nayve made 10.
