THE country’s bid to break the record for the longest basketball game ever played remains alive, but not without any hitch.

Now on its fourth straight day and running for 77 straight hours at posting time at the Meralco gym in Ortigas, participants of the novelty Basketball Marathon have been saddled with different concerns arising from fatigue, exhaustion, lack of sleep, diarrhea, and yes, even depression.

“Ang worry ko talaga is small injuries, marami na ang may foot blisters (paltos), mayroon ding hydration concerns,” said Jacque Ruby of the organizing Discovery Access.

“May isang case din ng depression. Yung isang Amerikano diyan death anniversary nung anak niya kaya medyo may burden,” he added.

The event started last Monday at 9 a.m.

Ruby is also worried at what the Guiness representative will say. The American representative is set to arrive on Saturday morning in time for the group’s target of breaking the world record by 9 a.m.

“Yun din talaga ang biggest concern namin. What will Guiness say. Did we comply sa guidelines nila or did we overlook anything?” stressed Ruby. “We are subject to the whims of the Guiness adjudicator.”

The organizers are now collating documents, videos, and statements of independent observers which will all be submitted to the Guiness official.

Asked if the pace of the game which is obviously slowing down will affect the bid of the country, Ruby expressed a bit of apprehension.

“Yan din ang isa pa naming concern. Isa 'yan sa mga binabantayan namin. May iba na kita sa video na hindi na bumababa. Kaso it’s human nature na mapagod,” he said.

But Ruby claimed he has seen the video of last year’s record setting game in Missouri, USA, saying "it was far worse than how the Philippines is carrying out the game so far."

“It’s worse, it’s worse. Yung iba naka-paa. Yung isa naka-upo. Tapos nakapasok ang dalawnag paa sa court, para masabi na nasa court pa rin sila, para masabi na may 10 players pa rin sa court. Ours is much, much better,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Discovery Channel official is pleased to reveal the 24 players competing have expressed optimism they can extend the game past the 9 a.m. target on Saturday.

As of posting time, the score is already pegged at 10,493 for Bounce Back against the 10,476 of Walang Iwanan with the time set at 77 hours, 44 minutes, and 48.4 seconds (3 p.m. Thursday).

The current record set last year was 112 hours and 13 seconds, with the Philippines hoping to post a new mark of 120 hours.

“If we keep this pace, we are also open to ending this on Sunday, instead of Saturday,” said Ruby. “The adjudicator will be here until Sunday. Pwede kaming 120, pwede kaming up to 150.”

“It depends on the condition of the players. They’re the ones who have been telling me to extend to other potential record breakers,” said the basketball marathon official.

Basketball Marathon life coach Mark Solano believes the two local teams can break the existing record.

“Kaya 'yan. It’s more of the mental toughness. Just this morning we had a life coaching team huddle. Everyone was motivated,” said Solano.

“Pinakamatinding worry ko lang may mag-collapse because of lack of sleep,” he said.

Since the game, all players were not allowed to leave the venue.

Makeshift beds and cabinets are placed near the court where some of the players are even caught by Spin.ph on cameras napping.

Players are rotated every two hours.
