WITH women’s basketball gaining ground in the country, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) hosted a webinar series to sustain the growth the sport has achieved the past few years.

The country’s basketball federation launched the live interactive event ‘Women in Basketball: Growing the Game’ in an effort to empower individuals involved in women’s basketball by arming them with additional knowledge.

An average of 257 participants attended the two-weekend sessions that started on August 7 and culminated on August 17.

Five guest speakers led by Australia women’s national team coach Carrie Graf graced the webinar.

Also part of the panel were Australian U-19 women’s team mentor David Hebert, Japan women’s national team coach Tom Hovasse, George Washington University’s Jen Rizzoti, and Carla Berube of Princeton University.

Gilas Pilipinas women's coach Pat Aquino appreciated the move made by the SBP after attending the same webinar.

"I'm so happy with the webinar where two coaches from Australia and us were there. I have learned a lot, and it's good for the women's coaches here in the Philippines," said the architect of National University Lady Bulldogs' dynasty in the UAAP.

"The program will help level up the women's game."

Among the topics covered were the psychology in coaching women’s basketball, developing offense and decision-making skills, building team concepts, and coaching high-tempo basketball.

The event also attracted the attention of coaches from the Southeast Asian region, who were also eager to learn from the distinguished panelists.

Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapore, and Brunei were all represented with an average of 87 delegates from outside the Philippines attending every session.

“I was really surprised with the number of attendees because this workshop was specifically for women’s basketball, so it’s very inspiring to see that many people are eager and passionate about pushing women’s basketball forward,” said Jong Uichico, who heads the SBP Coaches’ Commission.

Women’s basketball in the country reached new heights last year when the national team finally scored a breakthrough gold in the Southeast Asian Games. The team of coach Pat Aquino actually made it a double gold as the women’s 3x3 team also won the inaugural gold in the event.

“Developing women’s basketball is very important for the SBP,” said president Al S. Panlilio.

“The aim of the webinar series is to help coaches in women’s basketball deepen their knowledge with the help of highly successful and passionate speakers from all over the world,” he added. “We thank the FIBA office in Singapore led by Mr. David Crocker and Ms. Shu Ling Yew for all their help in organizing this series.”

Aquino hopes the SBP would conduct more webinars in the future discussing women's basketball.

"I would like to thank SBP Coaches Commissioner head Jong Uichico for making it happen, and Executive Director Sonny Barrios and Butch Antonio for all the support given to us women's coaches," he said.
