THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has started its preparations for the hosting of the Fiba-Asia championships in August with the appointment of basketball old hands to key positions in the local organizing committee (LOC).
SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan has been named LOC chairman, with executive director Sonny Barrios the chief executive officier and Moying Martelino, the former secretary general of Fiba-Asia’s predecessor—the Asian Basketball Confederation, deputy CEO.
“We are using the wisdom and knowledge of our senior basketball luminaries for our preparations,” Barrios told Spin.ph.
An advisory board has also been formed, made up of SBP vice-president Ricky Vargas, MVP Sports Foundation head Al Panlilio, NLEX president Ramon Fernandez, PBA vice-chairman Ramon Segismundo of Meralco, Rep. Robbie Puno, PBA chairman Robert Non, PBA commissioner Chito Salud, and Patrick Gregorio of SMART Sports.
“We also have working groups that will take care of several aspects like logistics, marketing, and government relations… Marami pa talagang trabaho,” Barrios said.
