Marvin Hayes-led Sarangani shocks favorites in 3x3 pool stage

Marlins send Butuan crashing back to earth on way to sweep of 3x3 pool games
    Oct 27, 2020

SARANGANI pulled off a massive heist in the Leg 4 group stages in the 2020 Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 President's Cup presented by TM Tuesday at Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba.

Placed in a loaded Pool A, the Marlins shocked Leg 3 champion Uling Roasters-Butuan City and equally tough Bacolod Master Sardines to snare top spot in the group.

Marvin Hayes was quick to the punch in Sarangani's 21-13 drubbing of Bacolod. The veteran forward drained four deuces to lead the charge with eight points.

Carlo Escalambre and Pamboy Raymundo then took turns in surprising Butuan, 21-19 to complete a sweep the group.

Escalambre unleashed 10 points while Raymundo got eight as Sarangani headed to the quarterfinals undefeated.

Butuan did save face with a 21-16 escape over Bacolod to still progress to the next round.

Gab Banal, meanwhile, was the hero anew as the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards once again ruled Pool C.

Nueva Ecija first hurdled Bicol Paxful 3x3 Pro, 21-13 thanks to the second-generation star, before his back-to-back deuces fended off Pasig-Sta. Lucia Realtors, 21-19.

Pasig also earned its seat in the playoffs with a 21-17 win over Bicol.

In other brackets, Big Boss Cement-Porac MSC gutted out tough victories to snag the Pool B top seed.

The Green Gorillas hacked out a gritty 18-15 victory against Petra Cement-Roxas ZN before pulling off a 21-19 escape against Zamboanga Peninsula Valientes MLV.

Zamboanga Peninsula still made it through the next round after its dominant 21-11 win over Roxas.

Joshua Munzon came alive late to help Family’s Brand Sardines Zamboanga City narrowly escape the upset axe with a 19-17 overtime triumph over Palayan City Capitals.

The two-leg favorites followed it up with a ruthless 21-7 downing of Pagadian Rocky Sports to top Pool D.
