WITH a quarterfinals berth at stake in their game against a dangerous foe, San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya unleashed one of his ‘secret weapons’ in Jason David.

David went on to repay his coach’s trust as he delivered the goods in the Stags' 64-51 win over University of the Philippines in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2 David finished with 13 points, none bigger than the two three-pointers he made in the final stretch to turn back a surging Fighting Maroons side.

Those two shots gave the Stags a comfortable 64-49 lead with three minutes and eight seconds left, which was enough to keep UP at bay for the rest of the game.

He also had four rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

"Well, my secret weapon. As I've said, Jason can play 3 and 4 positions so depende na lang kung ano ang kailangan ko sa kanya, so I guess he's doing fine in his job," said Macaraya after their sixth straight win in seven games at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

David's defense was just as excellent.

For the most part, the Dau, Pampanga native gave UP star Paul Desiderio a hard time on offense.

With David bothering him, Desiderio failed to make a single field goal in six attempts, with his only two points coming from the foul line.

"He has the confidence, he has the three-points, and he can defend very well in any position, hindi lang kwatro. He can defend, as an agile forward, medyo isa siya sa mga secret weapons ko," Macaraya said.

The 20-year-old David, though, played down his heroics, saying it was the team's defense that keyed the victory.

"Sabi lang po kasi ni coach, play defense lang po para makuha namin ang panalo, kasi yun lang po ang panlaban namin talaga, ang defense po namin," he said.
