SAN Sebastian turned on the heat in the second quarter and cruised past La Salle, 96-65, to grab its first win in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight group stage on Friday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Coming off a tough 70-67 defeat at the hands of San Beda, the Stags vented their ire on a Green Archers squad composed mostly of Team B players with the first team unavailable due to the ‘transition period’ from the Aldin Ayo era.
Still, the Stags showed the same grit that got them in the semifinals of the NCAA, as they outscored the Green Archers 31-13 in the second period, setting the stage for the blowout.
Ryan Costelo, Michael Calisaan and Allyn Bulanadi conspired in that period, forcing turnover after turnover to take the fight out of La Salle.
“At least ang importante makapasok kami sa Final Four. Itong laro na ito, nakuha namin. So hopefully madala namin bukas para wala na kaming problema,” said head coach Egay Macaraya as the Stags improved to 1-1, and will face Holy Trinity College for the last spot in semifinals.
“Sa totoo lang, gusto talaga ng mga bata na pumasok sa Final Four. Kahit pagod, pinipilit talaga nila. Sa tingin ko, they all wanted to win, pinakita nila ngayon, so far madala namin bukas,” he added.
Costelo led the Stags with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, as Bulanadi and Calisaan added 12 apiece. JM Calma finished with 10 points to go along seven rebounds while Ian Valdez also finished with 10 points.
Mark Alcala had 22 points for thje Green Archers as Renzel Yongco added 17 points.
