UNIVERSITY of San Carlos advanced to the next stage in the stepladder phase of the Southern Islands Championships in the 2013 National Collegiate Championship with an 82-73 victory over Iloilo Doctor’s College Monday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. three-point champion Miguel Plata scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth period, including 10 straight points in a 16-2 blast that put the game away.

USC set up a match against Cesafi runner-up and the reigning Southern Islands champion Southwestern University.

High-leaping import, Ahmed Salihou, also put up 19 points on top of his impressive rim defense that saw him swat away seven shots.

The Doctors stayed within striking distance, 54-56, heading to the final frame, but the Warriors suddenly caught fire as Plata came up with 10 unanswered points spiked by two three-pointers.

Guard Kiefer Lim added a lay-up off an alley-oop pass from Nico Magat, while Salihou tipped in a miss that gave USC a 77-61 lead with 4:05 left.
