ARVIN TOLENTINO hit the key baskets in overtime as Extreme 97-San Beda outlasted Mako-Hope Christian School, 100-96, to take the Seaoil National Basketball Training Center National High School Championship crown Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Tolentino finished with 20 points and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Finals for nailing the crucial points in the extra session.
The NCAA champions won the crown despite losing grip of a 21-point first quarter lead.
“We respect Hope,” said San Beda coach Brit Reroma. “It just boiled down to us hitting our shots."
The Cubs got a huge scare when the recently-crowned Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association champions grabbed the upperhand, 90-88, with 25.8 seconds to go in regulation following a three-pointer by Jollo Go.
But Rev Diputado came to San Beda's rescue, tying the count at 90-all with a short stab with 15.3 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Tolentino took it from there, scoring a triple to spark a 6-0 start by San Beda. He later converted on a reverse lay-up with eight seconds left to break a 96-96 count and give the Cubs the lead for good.
Tolentino then swatted Leo Guion’s shot to clinch the win for his team.
Go scored 33 points including 8-of-9 from beyond-the-arc for Hope Christian, while Clint Doliguez, the Most Outstanding Player of the whole tournament, had 22 markers.
Hope Christian trailed 29-8 in the first period, but slowly consumed the deficit until Doliguez scored on a jumper to give the school a 64-62 lead in the third quarter.
Doliguez along with Tolentino, John Apacible of Hope Christian, Paul Calvo of Iloilo, and Andrei Caracut of San Beda were named to the Mythical First Team, while Kendell Senining of Cebu, Diputado of San Beda, Hynric Ochea of Cebu, Kreniel Villoria of Bacolod, and Jio Carlo Agusan of Cagayan De Oro were included in the Mythical Second Team.
Darrio Burri of Iloilo was named Best Defensive Player of the tournament.
