CEBU CITY – Reigning four-time NCAA men’s champion San Beda takes its act down South as it competes against three Cebu-based schools in the Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate basketball tournament that comes off the wraps on Friday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Coach Boyet Fernandez and the Red Lions kick off their campaign at 7 p.m. when they take on the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in the main game.
The curtain raiser will have reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) champion University of the Visayas taking on University of San Carlos.
San Beda is using the tournament as part of its early buildup for Season 90 of the NCAA when it aims for a fifth straight crown after beating Letran in the title series last year.
Cebu will be welcoming home two former Cesafi stalwarts now with the Red Lions in forward Daryl Nazareno, who once suited up for University of San Carlos and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, and Alfred Sedillo, who starred for Cebu Eastern College back in 2012.
San Beda though, will miss the services of star guard Baser Amer and import Ola Adeogun as the two are preparing with the rest of the NLEX Road Warriors for the coming PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
Still, the Lions will be parading a formidable crew led by Ivan Ludovice, Roldan Sara, Van Abatayo, Anthony Semerad, Jaypee Mendoza, and Francis Abarcar.
The four schools will play a single round-robin with the team getting the most number of wins emerging as champion and winner of the cash prize worth P50,000. The runner-up will get P30,000, third placer P20,000, and fourth placer P10,000.
Proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund the different grassroots programs of the Cebu City Sports Commission.
