DEFENDING championa San Beda Red Lions picked up their second straight win while the University of Perpetual Help Altas got off to a rousing start last Saturday in the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup.
The Red Lions drew big baskets from Van Abatayo in the last four minutes as they waylaid the Technological Institute of the Philippines, 80-75, on the Engineers' own homecourt at the TIP gymnasium in Quiapo, Manila.
The Altas, coached by Lester del Rosario, got their campaign going on a bright note with a 77-55 flogging of the San Sebastian College-B Stags.
Abatayo hit eight of 16 points for the Red Lions in the final period, allowing San Beda to move ahead in the lead of Group A.
Hector de los Santos shot 13 points while Joel Brito made seven for the Altas.
Abatayo’s two free throws in the last 3:42 allowed the Red Lions to keep their distance, 73-68.
Three more charities from Abatayo in the remaining 18 seconds gave the Red Lions enough margin to stay of the Engineers’ range, 78-75.
