BASER Amer starred in a furious 13-0 closing run that powered San Beda to a 66-63 victory over De La Salle on Wednesday and into the semifinals of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Amer scored his team's final six points to wrest the victory for the Red Lions, who overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to set up a Final Four clash with defending champion National University on Friday.
Amer buried a fadeaway basket to cut the deficit to one point, 62-63. His triple rattled out on the next possession but he hit two free throws later to give San Beda the lead.
San Beda’s point guard also grabbed the rebound off Almond Vosotros’ miss, leading to two free throws with 6.4 seconds to settle the final score.
“Credit to my boys. We were down … but they didn’t want to lose. Our defense stepped up in the fourth,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez, who made special mention of Amer.
“When we need him, he steps up,” Fernandez said.
After winning their first six games, the Green Archers lost their final two, including the match against archrival Ateneo on Saturday, and tumbled out of contention.
The Green Archers appeared to have the game in the bag after posting a 63-53 lead on a Jeron Teng basket. But they failed to score again the rest of the way.
Art Dela Cruz tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Lions, Rome Dela Rosa added 12 markers while Ryusei Koga chipped in with 11.
Almond Vosotros led La Salle with 16 points, while Teng added 15 markers. Big men Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal each had 10.
