SAN BEDA romped off to its second straight win even without star guard Baser Amer, spoiling the debut of University of the Philippines, 70-58, on Friday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Amer sat on the bench for the second straight game after sustaining a strained hip in practice, but the Lions had no problem rolling past the Fighting Maroons and improving their record to 2-1 overall.
The Lions never looked back after entering the second quarter holding on to a 24-13 lead.
The three-time reigning NCAA champions then stretched the lead to as much as 58-38, giving them enough cushion to stave off a late UP comeback.
“I’m really happy with the way they played,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. “We started strong and medyo in the fourth, nagka-turnovers. Pero credit to the boys, they really prepared for this one.”
Rome Dela Rosa had 18 points while going a near-perfect 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Ola Adeogun had 12 points and seven rebounds, while second-year player Francis Abarcar added 10 markers.
Dave Semerad also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lions.
Incidentally, the Fighting Maroons were the same team Fernandez handled in his first collegiate head coaching job in 2010 before joining San Beda early this year. Fernandez went without a win in all 10 games he coached with UP.
“It was a learning lesson for me. I came down from the PBA to the college level. But no regrets. I’m happy that I coached UP,” said Fernandez.
Sam Marata, returning to UP after his stint with La Salle, was the lone double-digit scorer for the Maroons with 13 points, while Raul Soyud hauled 11 rebounds.
