SAN Beda and Lyceum clash for the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) crown on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Red Lions and the Pirates renew their NCAA finals match-up as they now vie for the PCCL crown, acknowledged as the national collegiate champion, at 5 p.m.
San Beda ruled the NCAA Season 93 crown last year when it swept LPU, a team that went 18-0 in the elimination round.
In their rematch, San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez remained wary against LPU, but hopes that its 57-52 semifinal victory over UAAP champion Ateneo gave the Red Lions enough of a confidence boost to repeat over the Pirates.
“It’s really nice coaching against coach Tab. Natututo ako ng konting diskarte and the Ateneo boys are really good on defense and they are disciplined in their offense.”
“I hope it will help us in our preparation for LPU,” Fernandez said.
San Beda is actually the defending champion of the tournament when the Red Lions shared the trophy with Far Eastern University in the 2015 edition.
San Beda is hoping Robert Bolick will be fit to play in the championship game after suffering a knee injury during the preliminary round.
“Kahit anong tournament, we are always looking to win. It will be a good rematch in the finals,” said Fernandez.
Javee Mocon and Donald Tankoua played a key role in the semifinal victory over Ateneo in stepping up in the absence of Bolick.
More than the championship, LPU coach Topex Robinson said facing San Beda is another chance for the Pirates to improve.
“The more games we play, it’s going to benefit us more. It’s not about redemption. It’s about trying to get better and grow. This is a free ride to the finals for us facing the top teams in the country. We are excited and look forward to this opportunity,” said Robinson.
Jayvee Marcelino is expected to be a marked man for the Pirates after finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds in their 82-69 victory over San Sebastian.
