    Lions overcome Tigers to salvage third place

    SAN BEDA beat University of Santo Tomas, 74-70, on Wednesday to claim third place in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

    The Red Lions salvaged their preseason tournament after a 9-0 run that led to the victory over the Tigers.

    The third-place win came 10 days before the Red Lions start off their NCAA campaign against College of Saint Benilde.

    “They came out with the win and para sa mga bata ito for them to prepare for the NCAA,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.

    Baser Amer had 15 points, while Rome Dela Rosa had 13 points for the Red Lions. Ola Adeogun and Art Dela Cruz came up with double-double outputs, the former having 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the latter tallying 10 and 14.

    The Red Lions broke a 55-55 deadlock with Baser Amer and Art dela Cruz capping off the run that allowed them to take a 64-55 lead.

    “I just told the boys that we just have to be ready and match up with (Aljon) Mariano, (Jeric) Teng and everyone. I’m happy for the boys. They deserve to be in third place,” Fernandez said.

    Santo Tomas was still able to cut the deficit to two points on a Tata Bautista triple with 12.4 seconds remaining in the fourth.

    But Dela Cruz clinched the victory with two free throws with 10.9 seconds left.

    Jeric Teng came up with 27 points and Karim Abdul added 12 points for UST.
