SAN BEDA pushed its defense into high gear in the third period to defeat College of St. Benilde, 74-58, on Monday and clinch a quarterfinal berth in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Francis Abarcar had a game-high 22 points, Baser Amer added 15 points, while Ola Adeogun had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks for the Red Lions, who limited the Blazers to only six points in the third quarter for a 55-44 lead entering the fourth.

San Beda notched its fifth win in seven outings to grab third place ahead of idle Adamson (4-2) as they jockey for seedings in the quarterfinals.

The Blazers, who entered the match on a three-game winning streak, shot an atrocious 1 for 14 in the third. But Lions coach Boyet Fernandez said CSB will still be a force to reckon with in the NCAA.

“CSB will be one of the tough teams in the NCAA with coach Gabby Velasco handling the team,” said Fernandez.

Mark Romero had 19 points for CSB.

    The scores:

    San Beda (74) – Abarcar 22, Amer 15, Koga 10, Adeogun 10, D. Semerad 6, Dela Rosa 4, A. Semerad 3, Pascual 2, Sara 2, Mendoza 0, Bonsubre 0.

    CSB (58) – Romero 19, Ongteco 10, Sinco 8, Grey 5, Argamino 5, Taha 4, Saavedra 3, Jonson 2, Bartolo 1, Carlos 1, Garcia 0.
    Quarterscores: 19-19; 39-38; 55-44; 74-58.
