The Ateneo Blue Eagles did it again.
The Loyola dribblers got big baskets from Nikko Salva and Kiefer Ravena in overtime to beat the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 98-92, and snare the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball crown last Sunday at the St. Placid gymnasium of San Beda in Mendiola, Manila.
With the victory, the Blue Eagles regained the title they last won at the expense of the Mapua Cardinals two years ago.
In the women’s finals, Jinky Ballasta and Snow Penaranda made 20 and 15 points respectively for the Adamson Lady Falcons, who won over La Salle, 62-43.
In the junior title playoffs, the San Red Cubs reclaimed the crown they lost to Hope Christian last year by trouncing the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 91-75, and with Javee Mocon scoring 17 points.
Salva and Ravena had 15 and 12 points, respectively, and their baskets in the last minute kept the Heavy Bombers at bay after they had come within a point, 92-93.
Defying a double team after receiving a pass from Ravena, Salva drove in for a layup and put Ateneo ahead, 95-93.
Ravena, who had five points in the extra period, then sank two charities to give the Blue Eagles a five-point cushion in the ensuing play.
Greg Slaughter, who had 11 points when the Blue Eagles beat the Adamson Falcons, 71-44, in the semifinals, led with 28 points this time around.
The Heavy Bombers, who fought off the University of the East Warriors, 64-57, in the semis, move ahead 84-83 in regulation with Nate Matute's triple with 23.1 seconds to go.
But Juami Tiongson's split from the line tied the scores at the end of the regulation period.
Brian Villarias led JRU with 21 points.
