THE Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder overcame the Olivarez College Sea Lions in overtime, 90-87, Wednesday at the PATTS College of Aeronautics gymnasium in Sucat, Paranaque.
Helino Franciso and Julian Bagares rose to the occasion in the last 30 seconds to lead the Blue Thunder to their fourth win in five games in the 20th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s basketball tournament.
Their heroics enabled RTU to move behind the unbeaten Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners (5-0) and stay on course for the second wildcard semifinals slot in this cagefest supported by Mikasa and Molten Balls.
Earlier, the Mariners stayed unbeaten following a 93-79 stopping of the Philippine School of Business Administration Jaguars, with Keith Baylon and Jake Yagonia firing 14 points each.
The Sea Lions’ second loss in five games came two days after they beat the Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite Vanguards, 75-65, with John Corneh topscoring for 17 points.
Francisco drove in with 25.5 seconds and shattered an 86-all deadlock. Then, Bagares sank one of two charities in the last 7.5 seconds off John Flores’ foul, allowing the Blue Thunder to gain a three-point advantage in the remaining time.
Their baskets came after Flores split his free throws in the last 46 seconds for the game’s last deadlock, 87-all.
Flores then tried to force a second overtime with a second remaining to go, but his three-point attempt missed its mark.
Rennel Montecillo showed the way for the Blue Thunder with 24 points, while Jopet Quiro hit 11 points.
