RENDELL Senining had a strong outing in his collegiate debut, leading the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars to a 79-66 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournamen Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Senining, a heavily-recruited guard from the juniors champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu chose to stay close to home instead of transferring to Manila, played a key role in USJ-R’ 17-0 run that broke the game wide open.
The former member of the Jr. NBA national team finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
CIT-U managed to erect a 61-47 lead in the early stages of the final canto led by their own promising rookie Joshua dela Cerna, who wound up with 32 points and 11 rebounds.
USJ-R suddenly caught fire with burly forward Matthew Parker scoring six straight including a fastbreak lay-up for a 65-61 lead.
Former University of the East Red Warrior James Regalado then completed a three-point play, Fletcher Galvez scored two more after a goaltending call while Senining added a free-throw off a technical foul on Wildcats’ head coach Gilbert Demape. Veteran forward Miguel Tabaloc put the stamp on the run by nailing a three-pointer for a 74-61 lead with 1:44 remaining.
Galvez, another rookie find from SHS-AdC, scored 13 points while Tabaloc finished with 12. Christian Parker added 10 to USJ-R’s cause.
Floyd Taboada chipped in 12 for CIT-U which sorely missed the services of top scorer Allan Dimco who is ineligible this season due to academic issues.
