CENTRO Escolar University defeated Technological Institute of the Philippines, 81-65, on Monday to grab the solo lead in the 1st Universities and Colleges Basketball League at the Olivarez Sports Center in Paranaque City.
Congolese center Rod Ebondo came up with 20 points and 20 rebounds as CEU scored its third win in as many games, while handing TIP its first defeat after two victories.
The Scorpions used a huge second-quarter assault for a 46-32 halftime spread after taking only a three-point lead (20-17) at the end of the first quarter
"I am happy with this game today because we were able to execute our game plan very vwell. Credit goes to the boys for their effort to win this game," said CEU head coach Yong Garcia.
The 6-foot-6 Ebondo outplayed TIP’s Nigerian imports, with the 6-foot-5 Ikee Akpuru coming up with 11 points and eight rebounds and 6-foot-10 Chris Okoronkwo, who had only two points and four rebounds.
Also contributing big for the Scorpions were Karlo Casino with 18 points, Jason Opiso with 11 and Ric Fuentes with 10.
Jorey Napoles was the only other double-digit scorer for TIP with 10.
