GILAS Pilipinas would love to have former national coaches Rajko Toroman and Tim Cone around to provide `fresh eyes’ to look at the team's progress in the lead-up to the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship.
Team manager Butch Antonio said Gilas has been in touch with the two former national coaches who they feel can give a fair assessment on the team's preparedness for the August 1-11 tournament in Manila.
On Wednesday, Reyes confirmed to a Gilas Pilipinas fan through his Twitter account @coachot that he was “in touch with Toroman.”
“Yup, we're in touch,” was Reyes’ response.
“When he (Chot Reyes) said we’re in touch, it’s not because he’s asking Rajko to set things up (for a possible tournament to replace Jones Cup),” Antonio told Spin.ph.
“Gusto lang ni Chot makita ni Rajko `yung team. He just wants to have objective eyes, pati si coach Tim. If they can take a look at the team to find out where we can improve,” explained the Gilas manager.
Toroman handled the original Smart Gilas national basketball team from 2008 till 2011 and steered the nationals to a fourth-place finish during the 2011 edition of the Fiba-Asia tournament in Wuhan, China. Reyes was a deputy of Toroman back then along with Ryan Gregorio and Charles Tiu.
On the other hand, Cone handled the Philippine Centennial team that ruled the 1998 Jones Cup championship and bagged a bronze medal in the Bangkok Asian Games.
Antonio said the team is hoping Toroman and Cone could visit the Gilas practice one of these days and give their insight and share their experience with them.
