SMART Gilas-Pilipinas 2.0 will only have the benefit of a week’s rest before it starts practicing again for a tougher competition in the coming 4th Fiba Asia Champions Cup.

Coach Chot Reyes said practice starts Monday next week, giving them just two weeks to prepare for the cagefest set to begin September 18 in Tokyo, Japan.

“Balik practice by Monday. Pahinga lang ng one week,” said Reyes.

Unfortunately, not all members of the team that won the 34th Jones Cup championship will be able to go as the Japan tournament formerly known as Stankovic Cup only allows a 12-man roster per team. Smart Gilas submitted a 14-man lineup in the Jones Cup.

Likewise, Reyes is looking to play other members of the national pool that were left out during the Jones Cup.

“We’re considering enlisting players like Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, and JV Casio to the team. So we still have to meet together to finalize our lineup,” said Reyes.

Deadline for submission of lineup for the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup is on Friday.
