CEBU CITY – It’s National University’s turn to show its wares against the best collegiate teams in Cebu when it competes in the 2014 Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup which comes off the wraps on Tuesday night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
The Bulldogs’ participation comes a week after reigning four-time NCAA champion San Beda saw action in the Cebu Mayor’s Cup basketball tournament.
Coach Eric Altamirano will be using the meet as part of the retooled Bulldogs’ preparation for the coming Season 77 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
NU is part of the six-team field that has been bracketed into two groups, with the Bulldogs comprising Group A along with Southwestern University and Raphael’s Café of sports patron Raffy Senining, while Group B will have University of the Visayas, University of San Jose-Recoletos, and University of Cebu.
SWU opens hostilities Tuesday when it battles Raphael’s Café, before the Green Lancers, reigning Cebu Schools Athletic and Federation Inc (Cesafi), take on the Jaguars in the nightcap.
The participation of the Bulldogs will serve as homecoming for Cebuano players Dave Wilson Yu and Rendell Senining, both former Sacred Heart-School Ateneo stalwarts.
Yu had also been named as one of three captains of the Philippine under-18 national team.
The champion squad will pocket P30,000 while the runner-up will bag P20,000.
The third, fourth, and fifth placers are to take home P15,000, P10,000, and P5,000, respectively.
