DE La Salle proved too much for San Sebastian, scoring a 90-74 rout behind its prized rookies to remain unbeaten in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at The Arena in San Juan on Friday.

The Green Archers never looked back after establishing an early lead as the rejuvenated UAAP power extended its winning streak to three games.

Archers coach Gee Abanilla, however, played down his team’s hot start in the summer tournament.

“I’m sure other teams are also experimenting so this is not really a good gauge of where we are right now," he said. "It’s about being consistent and getting better individually and as a team.”

UAAP Rookie of the Year Jeron Teng registered his typical numbers as he fired 13 of his 17 points in the first half, where the Archers started to pull away. But it was rookie guards Kib Montalbo and Robert Bolick who earned praise from Abanilla.

With veteran playmaker Almond Vosotros leaving the game after suffering an ankle sprain, Montalbo and Bolick earned more playing time and delivered in the fourth quarter, where the Archers maintained double-digit lead, which grew to as many as 23 points, 90-67.

“Very happy with the way they’re (young guns) performing. It’s still early in the preseason and I think they’re adjusting pretty well,” Abanilla said. “I just like the way they’re playing aggressive ball. They will learn some more.”

Montalbo, the prized recruit from St John’s Bacolod, tallied nine points and three assists in just 15 minutes, while Bolick, the former La Salle Greenhills star, wound up with five markers on top of three boards, three assists, and two steals.
