MANILA survived a late Zamboanga rally to score a 60-59 win in the MPBL Datu Cup on Saturday.
Reil Cervantes led the Stars with 21 points, including a clutch three-point basket that helped stave off the Valientes’ rally on their way to their 10th win in 12 games.
The Stars squandered a 15-point lead in the early goings as the Valientes rallied behind Reed Juntilla and Jonathan Parreno.
But the Stars played solid defense in the endgame, concentrating on stopping Juntilla, who couldn’t get away from Aris Dionisio in the final play.
Jomari Lacastesantos, a reserve guard from Zamboanga, was forced to take it to the hoop with time running out, but lost his footing, allowing Manila to escape with the win.
Cebu, meanwhile, scored a 78-74 win over the Marikina Shoemasters.
Patrick Cabahug scored his team’s last five points, with a triple with 56 seconds left putting the Sharks in front, 76-74.
The Sharks won for the third straight time and improved to 4-8.
Marikina absorbed its fifth straight setback and dropped to 4-8.
