UNIVERSITY of the East survived a tough challenge from University of Batangas, 81-60, on Tuesday to move into the next round of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Luzon-Metro Manila qualifiers in Tanauan City.
The Red Warriors limited the Brahmans to only seven points in the final quarter. After leading by 25 points earlier in the game, UE slowed down and saw its advantage trimmed down to just 53-51 at the end of the third period.
Roi Sumang had 19 points, while Charles Mammie added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Red Warriors, who will next play National University, which beat Perpetual Help, 70-67.
Head coach Boycie Zamar along with Ralf Olivares, Lord Casajeros, JM Noble, and Jairold Flores missed the PCCL game as UE had to split its players as well as its coaching staff with Cebuana Lhuillier, which also had a game in the PBA D-League on the same day.
Cebuana Lhuillier, which has a school tie-up with UE, bowed to Hogs Breath, 93-69.
