UNBEATEN teams San Beda and San Sebastian seek quarterfinal berths when they battle separate rivals on Sunday at the resumption of the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym in Manila.
The Red Cubs, reigning NCAA champions, collide with Letran at 10:30 a.m. before the Staglets meet Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Tournament titlist Chiang Kai Shek at 12 noon to usher the return of the high school cagefest after a holiday break.
Led by former Philippine U-16 team member Arvie Tolentino, NCAA Finals MVP Javee Mocon, and Alejandro Inigo, San Beda defeated Hope Christian School (95-91) and National University (81-77) in its first two games for the Group B lead.
Red Cubs coach Britt Reroma will also lean on guards Joseph Caracut, Rev Diputado, and Radge Tongco, all former national youth players, in their bid to defeat the Squires in their first meeting since the NCAA Final Four.
San Beda won, 61-57, in their semis showdown before sweeping San Sebastian in the finals for its 20th NCAA title.
Meanwhile, the Staglets blasted Xavier School, 108-98, before pulling off a stunning 66-58 victory over the Jerie Pingoy-led FEU-Diliman, champions of the UAAP.
Coach Raymund Valenzona has been drawing splendid plays from Alfren Gayosa, Michael Calisaan, Jon Macasaet, and Onyok Velasco Jr. to pace San Sebastian’s unbeaten start in Group A.
In other games, FEU tries to bounce back from that San Sebastian loss when it plays Ateneo at 9 a.m., while NU seeks its first victory as it collides with Hope Christian at 1:30 p.m.
