THE Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder turned to the stripe in the endgame to put away the Philippine Nautical Training Colleges Barracudas, 74-66, on Friday in the 12th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball tournament.
Sandy Cenal sank four gift shots, while Renel Montecillo converted one in the dying seconds to propel the Blue Thunder – coached by former PBA player Johnedel Cardel - to their third win in four matches at the National College of Business and Arts gymnasium in Fairview, Quezon City.
Paul de la Pena tallied 14 points, while Edwin Malimban scored 13 for the Blue Thunder.
It was RTU's second consecutive win after it waylaid the Philippine School of Business and Arts Jaguars, 68-62, Wednesday at the RTU gymnasium in Mandaluyong.
In their game against the Jaguars, Montecillo fired 15 points for the Blue Thunder, who are in third spot in the standings of this cagefest supported by Mikasa and Molten Balls.
The Blue Thunder will next clash with the La Salle-Dasmarinas Patriots on Monday at the Ugnayang La Salle gymnasium in DLSU-Dasmarinas, Cavite.
In other matches Wednesday, Trinity University of Asia, led by Joshua Alcober's 11 points, tripped Manuel L. Quezon University, 83-64, for its first win after two setbacks.
