The PBA Board of Governor under chairman Ricky Vargas already gave its approval for Rain or Shine to compete in the meet that will return after a three-year absence due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are honored not just to represent the PBA, but also the country in the Jones Cup. The high level competition will also help us to better prepare for the upcoming PBA season. We will give it our best shot and hope to bring honor to the country,” ROS Board Governor and team manager Atty. Mert Mondragon.

Rain or Shine, owned by the solid tandem of Raymund Yu and Terry Que, has been doing well in the ongoing PBA on Tour, and the Jones Cup campaign couldn’t have come at a better time when the Elasto Painters are eyeing to stay fit and sharp as the league goes on a two-month break to give way to the country’s campaign in the FIBA World Cup and Asian Games, respectively.

At the same time, the international level of competition should also bode well for the development of the team’s young core of head coach Yeng Guiao such as Rey Nambatac, Anton Asistio, Gian Mamuyac, Leonard Santillan, Shaun Ildefonso and Andrei Caracut.

The Philippines have had a winning tradition as far as the Jones Cup is concerned.

The country first won the tournament in 1981 represented by the Northern Consolidated Corp. of the late coach Ron Jacobs, which repeated in 1985 by beating the highly-favored USA team in overtime while carrying the San Miguel Beer banner.

Three years after, the Philippine Centennial team bound for the Bangkok Asian Games also bagged the crown, before Gilas Pilipinas won it again in 2012.

Mighty Sports delivered the country’s last two titles, first in 2016 and in 2019 when it swept the tournament behind a perfect 8-0 record.
