The Philippines' last dominant stand in Asia came in the early 70's when our national teams won the 1972 ABC Youth and 1973 ABC Men's Championship. "I remember noong 1972 opening ceremonies ng ABC Youth sa Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Noong tinawag ang Philippines, tumatayo ang balahibo ko. It was the proudest moment of my basketball journey. To this day it brings tears to my eyes recalling how our kababayan's came in full force to inspire our team," recalls Ramon Fernandez, then a 19-year-old center-forward who impressed many with small man moves rarely seen from a man his size. Fernandez would later blossom to become one of the country's greatest players, winning four PBA MVP awards and playing for a PBA selection that won a silver medal in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing.
