QUEZON City-University of the Philippines upset top-seed Pampanga Foton Tornadoes, 78-68, on Friday to emerge the first champion of the Filsports Basketball Association (FBA) Unity Cup at the Colegio de San Sebastian gym in Pampanga.
Paul Desiderio had 17 points, while Ibrahim Quattara finished with a double-double of 14 points and 20 rebounds for the third-seeded Fighting Maroons, who are in the thick of their preparation for the coming UAAP season.
It was a disappointing finish for the highly-favored Tornadoes, who finished the elimination with a 9-1 win-loss record and made the championship game by ousting Antipolo-Wangs in the semis.
On its way to the finals, the Fighting Maroons, who finished the eliminations with a 6-4 record, also stunned second-ranked Metro Racal in the semifinals.
