QUEZON City ended Makati’s 15-game winning streak, 88-77, in Game One of the MPBL Datu Cup first round playoffs on Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Jay Collado led the Capitals’ upset win, finishing with 27 points and seven rebounds to grab a 1-0 lead in their playoff series against second-seed Makati, which strung up 15 straight wins to finish the eliminations with a 21-4 record.
The seventh-seeded Capitals, which ended the eliminations with a 12-13 record, finished the first quarter with a 23-13 lead and maintained the gap until the final buzzer to pick up the road win.
Andoy Estrella had 15 points, six rebounds and eight assists, as Peejay Barua added 10 points for the Capitals, who will look to complete the upset on Monday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The MPBL playoffs resume on Thursday with the South Division first round in Davao City with home team No. 1 Davao Occidental Tigers battling No. 8 Cebu City Sharks at 9 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial College gym.
Fourth-ranked GenSan battles fifth-seed Bacoor at 7 p.m.
