    Quezon City bags outright semifinal berth with easy win over Navotas in MBT seniors meet

    Quezon City drives its way to an outright semifinals berth in the Metro Basketball Tournament (MBT) seniors division.

    QUEZON City played just hard enough to beat Navotas,99-81, and emerge as the No. 1 team in the North in the 2017 Metro Basketball Tournament (MBT) seniors competition at the Navotas Sports Complex.

    John Mahari, Jesus Manuel Asuncion, Julius Barraquias, Mikhael Justin Salazar, and Roque Estoce combined for 62 points for Quezon City, which finished with a 5-1 win-loss record to advance to the North Division semifinals outright in the tournament organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority, as part of President Duterte’s anti-drug campaign through sports.

    Manila subdued Valenzuela, 85-79, and San Juan routed Caloocan, 106-79, to forge a three-way tie with Marikina for second to fourth places with 4-2 cards in the tourney which has “Mobile App ng Bayan” Barangay 143 as co-presentor, Synergy 88 as main sponsor, my|phone “Bida ang Pinoy” as official mobile phone and Spalding as official ball.

    San Juan took the No. 2 seed (1.038), Manila emerged No. 3 (0.989) and Marikina No. 4 (0.972) after the FIBA quotient was applied.

    Mahari topscored with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Asuncion 13 points for Quezon City will face the knockout quarterfinal winner between No. 4 Marikina and No. 5 Navotas in the North playoffs which will begin on Sunday.

    It will be No. 3 Manila vs. No. 6 Caloocan and No. 2 San Juan vs. No. 7 Valenzuela in the other quarterfinal pairings in the North Division with the Whatta Whatta having the twice to beat edge against the Workhorses in the event which is also sponsored by San Miguel Corp., World Balance, Higer Bus.

    Quezon City's lone setback in came at the hands of San Juan, 91-92, in overtime during opening day last Sept. 10 on a buzzer-beating triple by Kenneth John Zamora of the Whatta Whatta.

    The 24-and-under tournament is also supported by Excellent Noodles, Nature’s Spring Water, 1-Pacman Partylist, Hopewell Sales Corp., Star Bread, Frabelle Foods, Regan Industrial Sales, Inc., Glitter.ph, Alcoplus and Archie’s Bespoke Bar + Grill.

    Jeff Ivan Lumbab and Jason Patrick Lucas paced Navotas with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

    Kimberly Olmoguiz finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and Algeric Ramirez added 19 points and five rebounds for Manila, which led by 13 points (83-70) before holding off Valenzuela's late rally.

    Manila's win also put to waste Jaymar Gimpayan's double-double effort of 29 points and 18 rebounds. Josiah Esplana added 17 points and eight rebounds for Valenzuela.

    San Juan relied on Romeo Descarga III (16 points), John Kenneth Zamora (13 points ) and Joshua Munsayac (13 points) to roll back Caloocan.

    Emmanuel Padernos had 19 points and eight rebounds and Mark Jhovie Sales had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Supremos, who closed out the classification phase with a 1-5 record.
